A Random Short Story by Rashid Keshavjee
By the year 2386, only a few thousand humans remained. With the outbreak of the Third World War due to rising nationalistic tensions, the human race decimated itself. The land was barren for years and years due to the constant bombardment of the once fertile soil. Desert consumed most of the Southern World and the melting of the ice caps resulted in the freezing of Europe, once the centre of trade. The only parts that were left untouched were the upper areas of the Earth, such as the previous regions of Canada and Russia. Unfortunately, sometime during the 2200’s, riots broke out everywhere, due to famine and the lack of resources. If the Third World War was not enough, this crippled the human race. It was as if it was a sign from god, an asteroid fell from the sky devastating every last person left in the western world. There was only a small population left in what was once known as Quebec. Contact had already been lost since the end of the Third World War, thus, they thought they were the last ones, and remained ignorant of the earth shattering force that whipped out the other remaining human factions. The last remaining of the humans, had managed to create a thriving society based on equality.
One could say that a true communism had finally been created. After the near irradiation of the human race, the latter generations learned from their mistakes. Everyone worked hard for the benefit of the community, not for money. In fact, money did not even exist, as people lived in complete equality. Everyone got whatever they needed through a complex system of resource allocation. A perfect and impartially system had finally been developed. In addition, the last of the human race were living in quite a lavish life. Everyone had to work extremely hard, but everyone had what they needed, and more.
It would not have seemed like the human race was being threatened to extinction, as the people lived in a highly futuristic society. The primary occupations were that of agriculture, basic supplies, and perhaps the most important, land reclamation. As much of the land had been turned into a wasteland, much effort had to be created to restore the faun and fauna, to increase and gather natural resources. This was a primary task, for if they did not, they would be at risk of dying at due to famine.
It was a society filled with compassion, love, respect, beauty, and trust; a Truly Human Society.
